The Float Disappears

I headed to a small forest lake in Sweden with a very simple setup — a float, a hook and a worm.

The plan was nothing more than a quiet afternoon by the water and, with a little luck, a trout or two for the smoker back at the cabin.

The lake looked calm. The fishing, however, didn’t stay quiet for long.

It didn’t take long before the first float suddenly disappeared beneath the surface.

A quick strike, a short fight and the first trout was in the landing net.

Two more followed surprisingly quickly.

What I had expected to be a long afternoon of waiting turned into a successful fishing session much faster than planned — and with three trout caught, it was time to head back to the cabin.

Preparing the Trout

Back at our old cabin in the Swedish forest, the trout were prepared for the next part of the story.

I made a simple brine using salt, crushed peppercorns and juniper berries, a little brown sugar, bay leaves and onion.

The trout stayed in the brine for 24 hours before being hung to dry and prepared for the smoker.

No complicated recipe — just a simple way of turning a fresh catch into something special.

Smoke at the Cabin

The following day, the trout went into our small tabletop smoker with beechwood smoking dust.

Soon the smoker began to hiss and smoke.

Then came the moment I had been waiting for.

The lid opened, a cloud of smoke rose into the air, and underneath were three golden-brown trout ready for the table.

A simple fishing trip at a Swedish forest lake had become a complete journey from the water to the cabin.

Sometimes fishing doesn’t need to be complicated.

A disappearing float can be enough to start the whole story.
